Bereavement & Death and Dying (In Development 8.20.19)
Because of our belief not only in the immortality of the soul, but also in the resurrection of the body, the Church professes hope in the face of death, and acts with charity in the funeral rites. The Church provides a number of prayers for the faithful to offer both to accompany the dying of a Loved one and to strengthen our faith upon their death. Through private prayer and public funeral rites, we strengthen our faith and hope, comfort those who mourn, and bury the bodily remains of the deceased with care befitting what was the Temple of the Holy Spirit.
With this message in mind, St. Joseph Catholic Church started a Bereavement committee in early 2019 that will support our Parish brothers and sisters in their time of grief and need. Anyone who would like to volunteer and has interest in the following areas should contact the Parish Office.
1. Funeral and Vigil Attendants
Attend either or both events and represent the Parish community
Mention their willingness to visit the mourner at a later date
2. Those who send cards
Send sympathy card one month after the death
Send a card at the anniversary of the death
Maintain records of death data and cards sent
3. Counselors/ Visitors
Parishioners with experience in counseling, nursing or social work
Possess empathy, compassion and ability to listen
Have some experience in personal loss
Visit the grieving when appropriate
4. Reception Assistance
We thank the Brotherhood of the Knights of Columbus and the Sisters of the YLI for assisting their respective members with receptions and refreshments in the Parish hall after funeral services.
We have other Parishioners that might not be members and might require assistance in preparing for a reception in the Parish hall and provide some refreshments.
